The Flight of the Butterfly

The Day of the Dead in Mexico, celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, is a time when the world of the living and the world of the dead intertwine. In Mixquic, a small town near Mexico City, the Day of the Dead tradition remains as alive as ever. From the preparations weeks in advance to the lighting of the graves on the final night — the moment when the dead return to Mictlán, the Mexica underworld. Families set up altars with marigold flowers, candles, bread, food, and photographs... guiding the souls that return to share a night with their loved ones.

What does death represent for Mexicans? A story told through the eyes of Erica Roque and her family, residents of Mixquic.
